FRESH PACKAGING SOLUTIONS
We Partner With Our Customers To Design Packaging For Optimum Cost And Performance.
During the past 10 years, we have worked with more than than a dozen customers, from nationally known household brands to small bootstrapping startups, to help them launch new beverage products in decorative pouches and specialty cartons. Many of them did not have in-house manufacturing for pouch filling, so our responsibilities were turnkey. Our services included initial queries to find the perfect co-man, managing specifications for consumer features (straws, spouts), finding the right fit-for-use material, and managing graphics for multiple print SKUs. In every case, we tailored a specific solution that was right for that brand's strategy.
We worked with a client who needed a custom designed pouch and fitment for a personal care application. The pouch needed to offer high O2 barrier, but the client wanted consumers to be able to see the product inside. The fitment needed to work with an applicator, so there had to be a perfect fit between fitment and bulb tube. Since the product had low viscosity, the client needed a package that would not spill if tipped over. We helped them design and source a spill proof fitment and a high barrier transparent pouch. We also helped them find the right contact filler for their demanding cleanliness and sanitation manufacturing needs.
Early on, we were involved with innovative technology such as slider zipper integrated into form, fill and seal production lines. By promoting this technology, we helped brands recognize the need to make packaging not only resealable, but easy to open for their consumers. Keeping the product contents in the original package also allowed the brand to extend its equity with the consumer until the product was completely used up.
Not all of our work includes sourcing. Working with a large QSR (Quick Service Restaurant), we were able to help them improve upon their process for how they source a major protein menu item. Our efforts helped to identify and reduce constraints in the supply chain, lower cost, and improve upon food safety aspects in each store.
We partnered with a client who needed a unique package design for a dairy cow supplement. The package was designed as an applicator for direct oral application with each animal. We helped our customer extend shelf life from days to months which allowed them to enter new markets and grow their sales. The packaging equipment required dual filling, which meant incorporating two compartments (one for powder, one for liquid) with a frangible seal that had to hold up during manufacturing and distribution, then be activated by the end user. A custom spout was welded to the pouch that had to fit an applicator. A clear gusset was incorporated to confirm that the product had been mixed properly. High barrier materials were used to protect the ingredients during the desired shelf life. A grommet was designed for hanging the bag during use. And finally, digital coding was used to trace product back to each individual package. The package remains an integral part of this customer's overall go-to-market strategy.
A new client was launching a line of high end wines for use with a countertop dispenser. We helped them design and develop a line of packaging that worked seamlessly with the countertop dispensing system. Pouch size, shape and the ability to hold tight dimensional tolerances were critical. We had to design for residual as well as dissolved oxygen inside the package, with almost no headspace and at target filling speed. We had to specify a material that had maximum oxygen barrier that would give our client the longest possible shelf life. We also helped our client partner with the best manufacturing solution for them in terms of print run size, along with the high quality printing they were looking for.
In 2008, we helped commercialize the first application of peel and reseal technology on chilled and perishable food in North America. Our initial clients were interested in the technology which was available in Europe, but not certain how they could obtain it. An extra challenge was that, unlike the European market, the package had to work with the High Pressure Processing (HPP) Preservation Method, a difficult task to be sure. By establishing strategic partnerships with those European technology owners and developing the technology for successful use with HPP, we were able to supply the necessary equipment and packaging materials for a turnkey solution. Early Adopters of this packaging technology included Maple Leaf Foods, Columbus Craft Meats, and Foster Farms. Maple Leaf Foods used the package as part of a new product launch, and along with clean label ingredients, were able to achieve double digit sales growth in a mature category.
A well-know canning company decided that pouches were something that their food service and institutional customers wanted and needed. Large format pouches to replace #10 cans have a strong sustainability argument to make. For inbound shipping, as many as 8 times the number of empty pouches can be placed on a truck compared to empty #10 cans. And, due to QSRs have less backroom space available in newer stores, pouches work well in those tight confines once they are used and need to be disposed of. There is also the worker safety aspect to consider. Pouches don't have sharp edges that can cut hands, and won't hurt if dropped on your foot. Because it is a retort process, extra care had to be demonstrated during the design of the pouch filling equipment as well as the pouch material. Working with the client, we helped supply a filling machine and the pouches that are working exceptionally well for this product launch.
In 2017, we partnered with a fresh juice company to commercialize the very first package for multi-serve size fresh juice utilizing the High Pressure Processing (HPP) preservation method . Working with the operations and marketing teams, we helped them source the right filler for their expected output, and design the package with the details that the HEB Grocery chain required for store shelf presence in the cold chain. HPP added extra complexity to the project, and a number of unique attributes were designed into the package in order for it to withstand the HPP process.
We had to go way back in the archives for this one. Working with Cincinnati based Andrew Jergens and their Japanese owner Kao, we were part of the team that commercialized the very first application of a personal care product in a flexible refill pouch, an FPA award winner that year. In those days, very little infrastructure existed to produce the pouch, and fill it. Despite those challenges, we helped Jergens find some of the very few supply chain partners in existence then to successfully launch the brand in retail stores. Now of course, there is renewed interest in refill pouches all across the product spectrum, especially with the growth of ecommerce and particularly in products such as soaps and shampoos, detergents, lotions, sunscreens, and fragrances. In 1994, the Jergens standup refill pouch was truly a product ahead of its time. Today, the personal care refill pouch is ready once again for its close up!
